Ward red card dampens Bell Inn win

Liam Ward saw red after ‘taking a pop’ at a player whilst the Bell Inn beat Spixworth 8-0.

Ward, sporting gloves in cold conditions, was sent off with 25 minutes to go as havoc broke out on the half way line. The dismissal means the left back may be suspended for the club’s crucial Junior Cup Semi Final in two weeks time.

In a slow first half, George Newbery gave the Bell Inn the lead with a good strike from 20 yards. Ian Babb doubled the scoreline on the stroke of half-time with a neat finish.

The second half saw a vast improvement, with top scorer Tom Brown making it 20 goals for the season with a 15 minute hat-trick. Subsitutes Robbie Stone, Johnny Holland and Kris Lane livened things up a bit, with Holland banging in 2 and Babbs another 1 to compete the score.

Holland did manage to miss a sitter for his hat-trick, with a header with was weaker than an Ethopian child without food.

As well as Ward’s red card, another point of concern is that of Richard Donovan. When most of the team decided on a Saturday night in, he still went out of the lash and consquently put in a second absymal display in two weeks. Slow, bad decision-making and sloppy challenges has given The Bell Inn a reason to worry when the cup semi-final comes around.

Due to this, the club have been told to put a rope all around the pitch to stop fans getting onto the pitch, and going after Donovan. With hundreds expected to attend, his life may be in danger.

The Bell Inn march on

Sunday afternoon, the worst time of the week for most of the Bell Inn squad. Usually hungover, tired from football and struggling to eat, the thought of waking up Monday morning for work couldn’t be any worse.

To make matters worse, the Bell Inn had a treck of a journey to Hainford to play Windmill Elite. This meant getting up 30 minutes earlier than usual. This didn’t go down well with a few players, with Tom Brown throwing up in the car park pre-match.

For once the match kicked off in time, with newly-appointed gaffa Ian Babb putting himself on the bench rather than opting for three up front. Contriversal? Maybe, as The Bell Inn found themselves 1-0 down after ten minutes against a team they had previously smashed to bits.

The first half was a bit of a slog, not much football being played on an awful pitch and ended 1-0 to Windmill. Somehow.

Babb decided to come on early in the second half, replacing himself with left back Liam Ward, to form a front three. This worked, even though Brown and Johnny Holland’s shooting was nothing short of disgraceful.

With 25 minutes left, Richard Donovan scored probably the worst headed goal of all time. Looped high and slowly into the middle of the goal, for some reason the keeper had gone AWOL and it went in.

Ten minutes later, Babb put the Bell Inn in front after beating the offside trap (for once).

And finally George Newberry completed the rout, heading home a woeful scuffed shot from Brown.
